Giclee Prints : Benefits For Artistic Printing

by Gray Hamilton

Because no screen or other mechanical devices are used, giclee prints have no visible dot matrix pattern. Instead, the image captures the tones and hues of the original painting. Giclee is a French word meaning to squirt or spray, and that is exactly how an ink jet printer works. The giclee method is particularly useful for reproducing landscape paintings and still life oil paintings.

Still, it can not replace a standard desktop ink jet printer and it is bigger. Giclee prints are roughly one meter wide and many people affectionately call it a knitting machine because looks of both are almost very much same.

In Giclee printing, the original is scanned directly from a specialized digital scanner. The scan thus captures all the nuances, details, and colors of the original. The scans remain vibrant and true to the original over time because of the special light-fast inks used, and the UV protective coating.

Since Giclee prints can be produced on almost any type of paper, the printers usually offer several you several options. The majority of Giclee prints are done on canvas, because most of the originals were done on canvas, and this produces a similar texture. The Giclee process also strives to produce colors that are as close to the originals as possible. Canvas prints do not crease when rolled and present a much stronger finished product than paper prints.

Giclee printing has many advantages over standard printing including the fact that after the initial scan is made, there is no minimum or maximum number of prints that must be ordered. One reason for this is that the size of a Giclee print is very standard and quite popular. They will fit into standard-sized frames which are the most economical method of framing..

Originally developed as proofs for the traditional lithography process, giclees were found to be able to deliver higher quality and more brilliant color than even the best presses could ever produce. This high quality quickly attracted the attention of artists, who then discovered gicless have the added advantages of low production costs and small run sizes. Collectors and museums value them for their high fidelity to the original art work.

While traditional prints and lithographs can have visible dot patterns, giclee prints can perfectly replicate the original. Giclees are created using a large machine which squirts light-fast ink onto any type of painting. The best giclees, however, are made using canvas, which has a texture closer to the original and is strong and durable. As many giclees as desired can be ordered. Popular types of giclee printing include the reproduction of landscape paintings and still life oil paintings. Historically, giclees were created in the lithographic proofing process, but people noticed that they were incredibly high quality, so their popularity among artists and galleries increased.
